How much do the units cost?
Though we do not have a precise figure at the present time, the design of the miniHome capitalizes on many cost saving opportunities. We are continually working to optimize its design so we can trim off extra cost in manufacturing and construction to make our existing model even more efficient. We are prototyping several units this spring which will give us an accurate representation of cost. We are aiming to sell a 12 x 36 base unit for 100 – 150k (CAD) depending on the features selected. Add on rooms would typically have a lower cost per SF as they would not contain the same amount of internal infrastructure. ↑
Why is it so expensive?
One need only look at the cost of a 2008 model 36? Airstream Trailer, or a 400 sf condo, or the new construction of a 400 sf off-grid cottage to get some perspective on cost. Our team spent 4 times the cost of a single miniHome on engineering and testing alone! All things considered, the miniHome is a remarkably good value! When considering any other residential architecture, including ‘prefab kit’ housing, we tend to gloss over the cost of infrastructure, foundations and the ongoing bills and maintenance associated with this. The miniHome IS to a large extent its own infrastructure.
There is a cost range among new, trailer RV’s from $5000 to $250,000 and well beyond. The miniHome is completely unlike any of these conventional offerings – as it is completely winterized, energy efficient, healthy, and styled by a dedicated design team of professionally trained architects and engineers with a passion for compact and green living.
When comparing the miniHome to other prefab projects, it is important to note that the miniHome’s cost represents a completely furnished, turnkey building. There is no need for a costly foundation or site servicing – everything you need is in the miniHome and fully operational the day it arrives on your property. No site-built building can claim that. ↑
Is there a Warranty?
All units have a comprehensive warranty for the period of 1 year, with subcomponent and equipment assemblies carrying their own warranties from 3 to 20 years – this is standard for RV’s and even many new home programs. The respective subsystems and components all carry their own warranties, (Marvin Windows are warranted for 20 years, Solar panels 18 yrs, Roof Membrane 5 yrs, etc.) As we are sending units all over North America – we want to be very sure about the dependable, efficient performance of every component – one of the reasons for the lengthy prototyping and testing period (2006/7) that resulted in several product, feature, design and system upgrades in our 2009 line. You can probably imagine what it would be like for us if a pump broke in every unit in 30 different states? We have not cut any corners. The miniHome is more robust than anything our manufacturers have ever built, and is equivalent to – and in many cases more refined – than the high-end, custom architecture we design. ↑
